Veterans Cup 2018: 2nd Oldschool-Worlds, unfortunately without Dieter!

The 24th Veterans Cup was different from the others before: Dieter Schadowski was no longer with us! The veteran of German BMX sport sadly passed away in spring 2018, meaning that we were no longer able to celebrate our veterans' meeting with him. His son Rainer Schadowski took over his role in judging and awarding prizes for the old-school bikes in the beauty contest. Thank you very much for this, so we had a Schadowski at this year's Veterans' Cup. The veterans held a minute's silence in Dieter's honour and gathered for a group photo, and this time we also dedicated the T-shirt to our long-time companion from Karlsruhe. This year's 24th VC was thus fully dedicated to the memory of our friend Dieter. Stephan Prantl presented Rainer Schadowski with a memorial plate as a prize of honour in memory of his father!

We remember Dieter Schadowski

Impressions of the bike show

The races were interesting again, even though we only had 6 instead of 8 riders per gate this year. But this meant there was more space on the track and everyone could choose their own line better. As we had a football World Cup again in 2018, as we did four years ago, we declared this Veterans Cup as a World Championship again this year, as we did in 2014. This means that this year it was once again about World Cup titles and the winners could call themselves world champions
This time there were some completely new riders at the start who had never taken part before and, of course, some old friends who are almost always at the gate. I was particularly pleased to see a French rider who had heard about our Veterans Cup and simply dropped by. Cyrille Alabouvette was travelling on Robinson and is a really nice guy. Cyrille, you are welcome to come back any time
A very special guest at this year's Veterans Cup: runner-up Oliver Kienzle, an old friend and team-mate of mine from the 1980s. Oliver came with a Murray and was completely styled, apart from the clothes even his VW Beetle was in Murray style! It was a special honour for me to be at the start with Oliver and to see him on a bike again after a long time. And it's hard to believe: he hasn't forgotten anything and is still going pretty fast. He was so fit that he won the oldies class straight away. So after his runner-up world championship title among the experts from the 80s, Oli now also has a world championship title among the veterans in 2018! The final result of the oldie class was: 1st Oliver Kienzle, 2nd Guido Kappen, 3rd Olaf Klein, 4th Stephan Prantl, 5. Mark Baltrusch, 6. Ralf Mauritz, 7. Christian Kees, 8. Guido Hannich
The final run of the oldies class can be seen on YouTube
The veteran class was a nice race with no crashes until the final. Then came the final and unfortunately in this veteran class final Uwe Burdack went down so badly on the 2nd straight that he had to be taken away by ambulance. Unfortunately, this crash affected Uwe for a few weeks afterwards, but he has since recovered and I hope that he will soon be a starter again at one of the next Veterans' Cups. Despite this crash, we saw the veteran class in the following order at the award ceremony: 1. Jordi Miranda, 2. Mark Antony, 3. Marcel Spang, 4. Steven Zimmermann, 5. Stephan Weis, 6. Uwe Burdack, 7. Harald Eisele, 8. Christian Stammberger. Finally, I would like to thank TSV Braunshardt and all the volunteers for their great support in organising the 24th Veterans' Cup. Next year we have the silver jubilee, so we will think up something special again. I look forward to celebrating our "silver wedding" of the Veterans' Cup with you in Sep-2019! See you there! Ralf Mauritz. PS: Most of the photos in this report were taken by Ralf Mauritz
